1995年4月，高自珍任教的学校宁县瓦斜初中三年级学生李勇，在参加全国初中物理奥林匹克竞赛前，母亲突然病逝，一月后，他忍痛参加了竞赛，并取得了一等奖，几个月后，他以优异的成绩考入庆阳师范。然而，母亲给他留下的是患病多年瘫痪在床的父亲和一贫如洗的家庭。16岁的李勇依然克服种种困难，背着父亲去上学。高自珍为他的学生身处逆境、自强不息的精神以及孝敬老人的品质所感动，同时，也为学生艰难的处境担忧。他义不容辞地拿起笔，奋笔疾书，草成一篇新闻通讯《李勇，背着父亲上学的师范生》。该文首先刊登于1995年12月23日的陕西《星期天》报上，接着，《中国青年报》、《甘肃日报》、《中学生导报》等上百家新闻媒体转载或播发，引起了人们和社会的广泛关注，短短三、四个月时间，李勇收到社会各界捐款67000余元，鼓励书信280件，给他在经济上、精神给了强大的支持。1996年3月25日，庆阳师范召开了向李勇学习的会议，号召全校师生学习他“勤奋上进、孝敬父母”的精神。4月初，甘肃省副省长陈绮玲为他捐款并题词：“向李勇同学学习”。4月中旬，共青团庆阳地委授予李勇全区模范共青团员称号。5月3日，共青团甘肃省委授予李勇全省模范共青团员称号。1996年底，联合国开发计划署和中国青少年发展基金会授予李勇首届“国际青少年消除贫困奖”。以李勇为原型的电影《背起爸爸上学》、戏剧《陇东娃》相继产生，影响和教育了一代人。1999年李勇师范毕业后又考入西北师范大学，2004年他大学毕业后因品学兼优被留校任教。站在大学的讲台上，李勇常常想，没有高老师的报道，没有社会的爱心行动，就不可能有他的今天。他也很自然地加入了他的老师倡导的救助贫困学生的行列。
